FlashONGames: Building Multi Platform Games in Flash, HTML5 and Native Applications with haXe

Building Multi Platform Games in Flash, HTML5 and Native Applications with haXe

We’ve been asked to give a presentation at FlashONGames, a Bay Area (read San Francisco, California) group that runs a regular meetup / mini conference normally held at Adobe’s headquarters in San Jose.

If anyone has anything they think I should talk about, or things I should show, please comment or email me directly at tarwin@touchmypixel.com.

Please come along if you’re in the area. You can also check a live stream out if you want to learn (laugh) from afar!

Sneak Peek of Future of the Flash Runtime!

Future of the Flash Runtime
For those who have missed this, Arno Gourdol, leading the Flash Runtime engineering team presented a session at Flash Camp Brasil last week entitled, Future of the Flash Runtime. Arno unveiled some very cool features we are working on right now, and I wanted to make sure you guys know about those in case you did not luckily attend Arno's session.

If you are curious about the slides, you can download them here.

Here are some of the features we are working on :

- Faster GC : GC hint API and more.
- New numeric types : float and float4 (very useful for Molehill in the future).
- Concurrency : Worker threads (shared nothing model) to leverage multicore CPU's. No more UI 's blocked when doing expensive operations.
- Stage3D : The API used for Molehill (that you know through the Incubator builds).
- StageVideo : Allowing full GPU acceleration (decoding + blitting) when used with H.264. Part of Flash Player 10.2 and coming to AIR soon.
- Threaded video pipeline : Will decode non H.264 streams on another thread, Net I/O will also be moved to another thread, all this bringing smoother playback.

I will be covering some of those in more details later on, stay tuned! :)

60 mins of Game Dev advice from 60 speakers at FlashMindMeld

60 mins of Game Dev advice from 60 speakers at FlashMindMeld:

Flash MindMeld 2011

A month or so ago David Fox contacted me asking if I’d be willing to submit a 60-second recording, answering the question “What makes or breaks a great flash game?“. Apparently 59 other speakers were also on-board. So I figured with those kind of odds at least the listeners could have a giggle at my “speech” and move onto something more inspiring. So I agreed.

David put a butt-load of work into the event. Collecting all the samples, organising everything and putting the site together. And today it’s finally all live! You can listen to some great snippets from the likes of Adam Saltsman, Tom Fulp, Edmund McMillen, Rob James, Stephen Harris and a load more. And when you’ve exhausted all of their brilliance you’ll find me. Apologies in advance for sounding like a teenager sniffing glue. You’d never have guessed my Dad was a radio DJ and my Mum a singer. Voice talent skipped my generation :) (I got the geek strain instead, so a fair trade)

Hopefully David will run the event again, with a new question and maybe another set of 60 speakers, as the concept is a great one. And of course thanks to Ilija for pixelating me. I think. (I do actually have a neck tho!)

Adobe Flash Player 10.2 is live!

Adobe Flash Player 10.2 is live!:

Adobe Flash PlayerThere we are, I am happy to announce that the Adobe Flash Player 10.2 is live since a few minutes. (Debugger builds available here)

I covered the list of features a few weeks ago, Flash Player 10.2 ships with Stage Video for high performance video playback and also the very cool native mouse cursors feature that game developers will love but also some performance optimizations with IE9 and also text quality improvements on mobile. With Flash Player 10.2, you can also enjoy fullscreen on one screen while you keep working in the other screen, pretty cool for the video people. Keep in mind we will keep working on little improvements like this in future releases, to always enhance the user experience with the Flash runtimes.

I wrote two articles so that you guys can get started easily with Stage Video and the Native Mouse Cursors. I hope you will enjoy playing with those features. To author for 10.2, just use the latest Flex Hero SDKs available on opensource.adobe.com (4.5.0.18623 or 4.5.0.19786) [...]

Learn what makes or breaks a successful Flash game with Flash Mindmeld

Learn what makes or breaks a successful Flash game with Flash Mindmeld:

Sixty Top Flash Game Developers (myself included! Damn Italians, they are everywhere) from Around the World to Share Flash Game Development Tips, Secrets and Advice at Online Flash Mindmeld MicroConference.

Flash Mindmeld MicroConference

On February 15th, 60 (myself included, so let’s say 59) of the world’s greatest developers behind Flash games will speak about what makes or breaks a successful Flash game. Knowing what it really
takes to develop a successful game is more critical than ever.

Each participant was asked to respond to the following question: “What makes or breaks a great Flash game?” Common mistakes made in development, how to stand out and what key points separate a good game from a great one are just some of the topics to be covered by these experts.

Each of the 60 Flash developers will present a 60-second tip, creating one of the first “central hubs” for critical information on how to make a great Flash game.

Flash Mindmeld MicroConference Participants

It was very funny to take part to the Flash Mindmeld. When I was asked to record a 60 seconds audio tip, I wrote it down and it was very happy with it, until I realized it took me almost two minutes to read it. So I had to redact it a lot of times, until I came with my 60 seconds tip.

You are warned, my spoken engRish sucks, but you’ll probably find interesting the remaining 59 audio tips.

Meanwhile, register to the Online Flash Mindmeld.

Iain Lobb Blog: Free Flash game source code! Win Adobe Master Collection!

Iain Lobb Blog: Free Flash game source code! Win Adobe Master Collection!:

Stanford

I've decided to give away the full source to a Flash game! Here's why - Mark 'ickydime' Grossnickle has organised a game development contest to coincide with Stanford University's annual charity 'Hackathon'. Anyone can enter (that means you!) and the top prize is a copy of Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection (that's all the Adobe software basically) worth $2500.

The theme of the contest is 'benevolence' which basically means being charitable and generally a good person. Mark has asked me to help judge the contest, so I can't enter, but I thought my benevolent act could be giving away the source code to a game, to get you started or help you learn game dev.

Ok, so it's not really a full game, but it is a working game engine with a playable character, enemies, bullets and NPCs. You can see it in action here (arrow keys and spacebar) and download the source code here. It compiles in the Flash IDE, so if you want to use the Flex compiler you'll have to hack it a bit.

Official Flash GAMM Kyiv 2010 review

Official Flash GAMM Kyiv 2010 review:

The fifth conference of flash games developers and publishers Flash GAMM Kyiv 2010 was held on December 4-5 in Kyiv.

We keep on growing and beating new records! This time the conference welcomed over 400 visitors from different countries.

The event took place in KyivExpoPlaza exhibition center with 2 spacious session halls, 2 sponsors halls for business negotiations, a meeting room for gold sponsors and a large coffee-break zone.

The conference program grew as well. During two days of the event we had 20 lectures (5 of them in English), a Workshop by i-Jet Media, a master class by AlternativaPlatform, another master class by Wacom, two round table discussions, a game-lynch and flash game contest award ceremony.

We would like to express our gratitude to all the speakers for sharing their valuable experience and significant figures.

At the end of the first conference day the participant were taken to the official After-beer-party sponsored byWheemplay. Though the room didn’t appear enough for all the willing, and free beer went off quite quickly, the atmosphere was really warm and friendly, and flash discussions dragged on till the morning. We would also like to thank Alternativa for supplying the party with extra beer [...]
